On this page of the Muster Roll the writter has added in a column next to 'age' which is thought to be a chest measurement for a uniform. The tallest man on this page is Donald MacKintosh, a constable, who was 6 foot 2 inches and had a chest measurement of 41½ inches

The Muster Roll of Volunteer of the Badenoch Company provides a most interesting record of Inverness-shire men who served as Volunteer soldiers from 1861 to the early 20th century. It lists the names and addresses of the Volunteers, and includes details such as height, age, occupation, signature, date of enlistment; and there are other notes on military service.

The Muster Roll dates back to the early days of the Inverness-shire Rifle Volunteers when the 6th Badenoch Company was raised by Major Ewen Macpherson of Cluny in 1861. The Company wore the kilt and belted plaid of Macpherson tartan, with Elcho grey doublets, plain glengarries, black waist belts and goat skin sporrans. At the first muster parade held on 31 August 1861, Cluny addressed the Volunteers in Gaelic and complimented them on the progress they had made with their drill.

In 1880 the ten companies were consolidated as the 1st Inverness (Inverness Highland) Rifle Volunteers, and the 6th (Badenoch) Company became F Company. Its Headquarters were at Kingussie. After the Army Reforms of 1881 the battalion was re-designated as the 1st Volunteer Battalion Cameron Highlanders. In 1893 it was authorised to adopt the dress of The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, with the distinction that silver lace was substituted for gold, and Battle Honours were not worn.
