This is the will of Lachlan Macquarie 1825, kindly supplied by the Scottish Archive Network (SCAN).
Lachlan Macquarie (1761-1824) was born on the island of Ulva. He joined the army and served in America, India and Egypt. In 1810 he became Governor-General of New South Wales in Australia. When he arrived in Sydney (1809) it was an unruly and troubled town and so he ordered the building of roads, houses, public buildings and wharves. He founded several towns and gave rights and important jobs to ex-convicts. According to his will he wanted to spend his final days with his family on his Jarvisfield estate in Mull but he died in London in 1824. Although he left the biggest part of his estate to his son and family, he also left an inheritance to his Indian friend and servant, George Jarvis.
'all other parts of the foregoing Codicil; And I further will and direct that the lands of Loharnacoil in Mull some time since purchased by me for £20,500 Sterling shall be settled upon my said son and his heirs and my other heirs specified in my last Will: exactly according to the destination of my other Estate of Jarvisfield (signed) L.
