John McGill was born in Glasgow in 1946 and attended school and university there. He did his teacher training in Edinburgh and went on to teach English in Orkney, Shetland, Germany and Lincolnshire.

John now lives on a farm on the west coast of mainland Orkney, close to the Neolithic village of Skara Brae.
