Publication of poems by an 18-year-old girl from Shetland
FULL ARTICLE
Proposals for Publishing by Subscription, POEMS on various occasions, BALLADS AND SONGS - Dr D. P. Campbell
These poems are the productions of a young and untutored female, who is now only in the eighteenth year of her age, and who having passed almost all her days in Shetland, enjoyed, it will be believed, but few advantages favourable to education, and still fewer to the cultivation of the Muse.
This being considered, there is little doubt but the public, ever willing to foster the buds of genius, will, eagerly encourage the attempt now made to call forth rare and unobtrusive Merit from the shade, and give permanency to the effusions of a Muse, which, without their approving smile, must, like the solitary blossoms amid which she has passed her hours of lonely inspiration, "waste their sweetness on the desert air."
It is therefore earnestly hoped that the friends of Merit and the admirers of Poetry will cheerfully bestow the reward of soothing approbation on one of those, who, while they fit to the lyre the feelings of a generous and an amiable mind, and thus prepare a rich fund of virtuous entertainment for mankind, are too often "Luckless in life, and posthumously great."
In thus rating the disadvantages under which the Poems now offered to the public were composed, it is not intended to deprecate the severity of criticism; but to show, what the friends of the Authoress from a perusal of her works are led to conclude, that Genius may mature and perfect her works without the advantages of scholastic education, and that Fancy seldom stands indebted to time or place for the materials of which the builds the superstructure of the Poet's fame.
It only remains to be added, that though the Publisher, Mr. Young, Bookseller, Inverness undertakes the talk of issuing Proposals, and of receiving Subscriptions, he is no more interested than any other individual in doing so, the profits of the publication being intended for the sole benefit of the Authoress.
The Poems will be printed on a superfine wove paper, in foolscap octavo, and with a new type call on purpose for the Work. Price to subscribers 6s (?) to be paid on delivery. END
