THE CASTLE LANDSLIDE - RESTORATION WORK BEGUN
The Inverness Castle Committee of the County Council who have charge of the reconstruction scheme in connection with the recent landslide, met in Inverness on Wednesday, Mr Charley Tinker of Kilmartin, Lord Lovat, Mr Alex. Munro of Leanach, Mr Walker of Leys and others were present. The meeting had under consideration a new scheme promulgated by Mr Tinker, in which he suggested that part of the ground affected by the landslide and purchased by the County Council, and which it had been arranged to remodel, should be used for the purpose of erecting shops with offices above which would accommodate the county officials and their staffs, who were now in offices rented in the town. The new scheme, it was said, would cost about £15,000. The meeting went carefully into the scheme, which, it was declared, was in many ways a thoroughly sound one. At the close, however, the majority favoured the old scheme of banking the Castle Hill and erecting a retaining wall, etc., at a cost of £6,000. The work, under the direction of Mr MacVinish, the successful contractor, has already begun, and will afford employment to quite a number of men. Yesterday a squad of men began clearing away the debris in the great gap caused by the landslide. Another squad of men begun operations in removing part of the huge wall enclosing the old Prison Court-yard, and the building now the headquarters of the Inverness County Council. - CASTLE SCHEME PROTEST MEETING ? TO THE EDITOR OF THE INVERNESS COURIER ? Sir, - I was present at the meeting in Inverness Town Hall on Wednesday evening to hear the protests by the shopkeepers and householders in Castle Street against the proposed improvement scheme, and I have yet to hear them. Had I known that the purpose of the meeting was to give the obstructionist group in the Town Council yet another chance of airing their views, I would certainly not have gone. With all respect to the Town Councillors who delivered addresses, I think they might have taken a back seat for once, however distasteful that might have been to them, and allow the public to hear what the Castle Street shopkeepers and householders had to say. Only the shopkeeper affected by the scheme spoke; another, who is not affected by the town scheme but by the County Council scheme, seconded the resolution. If this is all the opposition that can be mustered for an organised protest meeting. I think the Town Council can safely go ahead with the improvement knowing that they are doing real service for the vast majority of towns-people. - Yours etc, CLACH BOY
END
