Argyll and Bute Council is the second largest Scottish local authority in terms of geographical area, stretching for over 100 miles from Appin in the north to Campbeltown in the south and more than 80 miles across from the island of Tiree in the west to Helensburgh in the east. It has 6 main towns, 26 inhabited islands and over 3,000 miles of coastline, with a population of 91,000. 5% of the population are Gaelic speakers and the influence of Gaelic culture has a great impact on the traditions and heritage of communities across the authority area.

The Council's Library and Information Service provides a wide range of materials and facilities to meet the leisure, educational, informational and cultural needs of the community. The Local Studies department plays a vital role in preserving historical information about the area and enabling access to the material for researchers, local historians and genealogists.
