Inverness, Nairn & Badenoch & Strathspey Schools' Cultural Co-ordinators

Time Travellers

Primary schools from around the Highlands were invited to take part in an exciting heritage and visual arts project. The pupils visited sites of historical and environmental interest within their local areas. They were accompanied by their local heritage officer, countryside ranger or historical expert, as well as visual artists John McNaught and Fin Macrae. A collection of the stunning photographic images created by the pupils are shown here and represent some of those sites visited.

The pupils were given the task of recording their visits through digital photography, making sketches and prints and collecting material to take back to the classroom; including mushrooms, leaves, moss, branches, stones and bones. On their return to the classroom all the images were downloaded onto computer and collectively they decided how their site should be interpreted. Out of over 100 images taken for each site every school created one collaged image that they felt represented their visit and site.

The final images, created by the pupils, are beautiful and individual works of art that capture the history and beauty of the Highlands. It is hoped that these images will inspire all who view them to visit and discover the sites for themselves.
