Soldiers in Inverness the day after Britain declared war against Germany

Shortly after the declaration of war, thousands of soldiers mobilised at Inverness. These included the 4th Cameron Highlanders, the Royal Horse Artillery, the Highland Field Ambulance, the Army Service Corps and the Transport and Supply Column.

The khaki spats seen here were worn until the beginning of World War I, but they proved impractical in the trenches and were replaced by puttees
