This substantial building is Portree Hotel, built in 1875 with a three storey corner block by Alexander Ross. The increase in traffic through the growing village of Portree necessitated construction of suitable accommodation. It continued to operate as a hotel throughout the years, and still is busy year round.
The hotel was built at the corner of Wentworth Street and Somerled Square, taking advantage of the expansion of buildings and traffic from the pier area. The square became more the centre of the village, with banks, a church, a courthouse and a war memorial. There is also space for car parking, the bus stance, and public seating, making it, on a nice summer day, a very pleasant place to stop.
