This postcard shows a view of Badcaul (Badcall) Bay, just south of Scourie in west Sutherlandshire.
The long, two-storey building (centre left) is a salmon curing station, dating from around 1800. By 1976, the building had been converted to houses.
The salmon processed at Badcall would have been preserved in barrels, either with salt, or boiled and stored in vinegar. They would then have been exported to England or abroad. Until refrigeration was invented, salmon could also have been preserved in specially constructed ice houses
